The most destructive are
The ones we tell ourselves.
“Everything’s gonna be OK”?
No, sometimes it won’t be.
“One drink ain’t gonna hurt”,
But it never stops at one, does it?
“She’ll get over it by tomorrow”
She may never wake up tomorrow
“He’s too young to understand”
You may have just scarred him for life.
“I’ve been happily married for years now ”
While wiping away the tears in secret.
But oh those lies,
The comfort they bring!
So we tell them again and again.
